Influenza (flu)
Influenza (commonly known as the flu) is easily transmitted from person to person and is one of the leading causes of absenteeism from work. Unlike the common cold, it can leave a person unable to function for several days. Getting an annual vaccination is the best protection from flu and its debilitating affects.

Pneumonia
The pneumonia vaccine prevents bacterial pneumonia, which results from an infection of the lungs. There are more than 200,000 cases of bacterial pneumonia each year in the US alone. One shot usually lasts most people for up to five years.

Tetanus/Diphtheria
Tetanus/diphtheria is caused by bacteria, which enters the body through cuts or wounds. If left untreated, it can lead to breathing problems, paralysis, heart failure and death. The good news is that it's preventable as long as adults and children receive immunization and booster shots every 10 years. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now recommending that adults be immunized at age 50 since most have not been vaccinated regularly throughout their lifetime.

Hepatitis A
Hepatitis A is a highly contagious and sometimes fatal liver disease, which is transmitted through contaminated food. Those with a hepatitis A virus infection may not have any signs or symptoms of the disease, as it is primarily detected by a blood test. Vaccinations to prevent this disease are highly recommended.

Hepatitis B
The virus for hepatitis B is spread through the exchange of bodily fluids, such as blood transfusions, contaminated needles, and sexual contact. Although, the virus does not kill cells directly, it activates cells in the immune system, which causes lifelong infection, cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver, liver cancer, liver failure and even death. Vaccinations to prevent this disease are highly recommended.

Meningitis
Bacterial meningitis is the inflammation of the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord. Spread through air droplets or direct contact with an infected individual, it can be fatal to its victims and can strike anyone at anytime. College students living in dormitories or residence halls are four times more likely than the average person to contract the disease. Getting vaccinated is the best chance to avoid the debilitating and sometimes deadly affects of this disease.

Cholesterol
High blood cholesterol has been shown to be associated with heart disease. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute recommends that adults be screened for high blood cholesterol every five years. The entire procedure is simple and takes only minutes, including results.

Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is the most common type of metabolic bone disease in the U.S. It occurs when the body fails to form enough new bone and/or when too much of the old bone is reabsorbed by the body. There are a number of causes of osteoporosis, however hormone deficiencies (estrogen in women and androgen in men) are the leading cause. Women, especially over the age of 60, are the most frequent sufferers of the disease. It has been suggested that routine screening be done to detect early deterioration of bone mass in postmenopausal women.

Glucose
Glucose is a metabolite in the body that is needed for cells to function properly. Elevated levels suggest insulin resistance, which is a risk factor for developing diabetes, a disease that afflicts nearly 16 million people in the United States. Glucose screenings are highly recommended. The procedure is very simple: a drop of blood is taken from the fingertip and placed on a test strip. Results are ready in 30 seconds.

Hemoglobin A1c
Hemoglobin A1c measures glucose management. The procedure is recommended for diabetics and is conducted by performing a simple finger stick. Results are mailed to the participant within 72 hours. If the results are not in normal range, a doctor or nurse will contact the participant directly to discuss the results and make recommendations for further testing.

Blood Pressure
Blood pressure is the force blood exerts against the artery walls as it is pumped by the heart. High blood pressure (also known as hypertension) can contribute to the buildup of plaque in the arteries. Detecting and treating hypertension can prevent many health problems including stroke and heart disease. It is recommended that adults get their blood pressure checked annually.

Body Fat
Body fat, not weight, is one of the best measures of fitness. Body fat analysis can determine certain risks of developing diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and stroke. Screening results allow for realistic goals to be set in terms of weight adjustment, eating habits and exercise. Maxim utilizes the Futerex-5000/XL and the BodyLogic Pro to determine body fat. The procedure is simple, non-invasive and very accurate.

PSA
PSA screening measures levels of prostate-specific antigens in the blood and is one of the best tools currently available for detecting prostate cancer in the earliest and most curable stages. Prostate cancer is the third most common cause of death from cancer in men of all ages and is the most common cause of death from cancer in men over 75 years old (in black men over 60 years old).

Laboratory Health
Maxim works with several laboratories to perform various types of blood tests. We will draw blood and then take it to a lab for assessment. Our labs will perform a Complete Blood Count (CBC) and blood typing and screen for thyroid problems, allergies, and prostate trouble.

Health Risk Assessments
Maxim can perform health assessments that are designed to help evaluate lifestyles, identify health risks and decide where and how to make improvements. We assess issues such as risk for cancer and heart disease, provide overviews for safety, nutrition and fitness, and offer recommendations on how to reduce the risk of stress, disease and illness.

Tuberculosis (TB)
Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious, inflammatory disease that is chronic in nature and commonly affects the lungs (pulmonary tuberculosis). It can be spread from an infected person by coughing, laughing, sneezing or even talking. To screen for TB, a small amount of testing material is placed just below the top layers of skin on the arm. Two to three days later a health care worker checks to see if a bump has developed. If the bump is of a certain size (varying with group), the person is presumed to have TB infection.
